I think that RAID 1 (mirroring) is a better solution than RAID 0 or RAID 5 when it comes to video editing, where read speed is of more concern than write speed. When you're writing data to the hard drive, it's bottlenecked by processor power, not disk speed. You're not dealing with playback of multiple streams of data.

RAID 1 benefits from being able to read from both disks at the same time, and is much, much more reliable than RAID 0, which has 1/2 the reliability of a single hard drive. With RAID 1, both drives would have to go down at the same time for you to lose any data, which is very unlikely to happen.

Exactly the info I was looking for, thanks. However, it stopped just as it got really interesting.

I'm in the process of buying new disks for my i7 MacBook Pro and Final Cut Studio, as my (optimisticly purchased) USB 2 disks keep dropping frames.

I need around 10 TB of space (w/extra for mirroring), so should think carefully about my choice.

My question is - FireWire 800 or SATA? RAID or no RAID? So far, I'm looking at a WD MyBook Studio (2TB, FireWire 800) vs. a 4TB RAID + eSATA external drive (w/FireWire 800 option, so I can always change my mind there). The price difference isn't that huge, so functionality is key. Any thoughts?

I would think SATA is the way to go... but With FireWire you can easily connect more disks to one port, although I've read that five or more disks will slow down communication. How is this done with SATA disks?

I'd appreciate any input.

What is a good external hard drive for Final cut Pro. I am learning it at the media center and they only said it has to be 7200 rpm but I've noticed many people are talking about failed drives.
